ELAC FS 210 CE - Stereo (Germany) review

With their new Crystal midbasses and an X-JET can Elac FS210 "CE" with two drivers present particularities?

ELAC FS 210 seems to subscribe to have special editions. After the "normal" series expired several years ago, it was through the FS 210 "Anniversary Edition" which, in turn, had to make way to the recently FS 210 "Crystal Edition". The name says everything about the most significant change in the new model: The 200 line has now imported the "crystal membrane-equipped basses of the striking 240er series.

Following the proven model of manufacturer is that the new bass drivers, of course, so-called sandwich membranes. That means on a conventional paper cone is in a complex and very precise procedure to be bonding a layer of aluminum is applied, whose weight at a thickness of one eighth millimeter is quite negligible.

The new honeycomb structure, optically reach the surface of a crystal out stiffens the thin material "significantly" to quote ELAC, and ensures greater stability and lower distortion, while very low weight. A brilliant coup, the FS 210 "CE" in the hearing test with an extremely clear, fast and above all, extremely precise bass thanked. And the reflex port, tuned in the regions around 30 Hertz builds also a very sturdy foundation in the listening room.

Its enormous bandwidth down the FS210 incidentally owes a further feature of the new chassis. The voice coil has two points of contact with the membrane surface and is not like the conventional drivers. jointed just on membrane neck. To cope with the burden of an additional octave.

But a good bass alone, of course, does not make a speaker. Therefore, the developers combine the excellent midbass drivers with a high-tech chassis, called "X-JET". It is a coaxial driver: a lofty JET tweeter, legendary Elacs development of the Air Motion Transformer, here is surrounded by a competent ring radiator type midrange.

This midrange driver consists of a very thin aluminum flat membrane, stabilized by a honeycomb structure with a 78 mm diameter voice coil finally attached to it, driven by a powerful but low stray magnetic field. This ensures that the midrange has minimal interference up to 50 kilohertz where the JET tweeter exercises.

These are packaged in an elegant chassis in a voluminous and very well finished cabinetry. The rear bass reflex port, as usual with ELAC, can be closed, resulting in additional flexibility in the bass sector and also makes possible for a slightly lower wall distance. Generally, it prefers the box however, the air medium to larger spaces umzuwälzen.

Assessment

How many of the newer models combines the challengings with a very high fun factor of the ELAC FS 210 CE? Especially the rich and extremely deep foundation is significantly higher than that which is usually found in this price range.

Measurements

That's what we call Bandwidth: The playback of the FS210 CE starts at around 30 hertz and ranges without significant waves or dips to 20 kilohertz. Even there, the converter still no transparent institutions, and composition. The manufacturer stated 50 kHz are quite realistic. Thanks to the wide dispersion of the coaxial system the orientation of the box is also largely uncomplicated (gestrichel-th line at 30 degrees Achsabweichung). The impedance of the course is very critical. The tweeter and the midrange have a good timing - the bass chassis hangs about a millisecond behind.
