ATC dual suspension tweeter design animation
ATC dual suspension system

Unlike almost any other 25mm tweeter on the market the SH25-76S is a dual suspension design which ensures pistonic motion, suppressing anharmonic rocking modes, even at high drive levels, and enables the use of narrower magnetic gaps. This, along with a short coil, long gap configuration ensures unparalleled linearity and incredibly low distortion throughout its intended operating band.

The soft dome diaphragm is based on a complex geometry which maximises power transfer from the former, extending the high frequency response and giving a smooth off-axis response.

The geometry of the waveguide is designed for optimum dispersion and an extended on-axis frequency response. It is made from a precision machined alloy so that the entire structure is extremely rigid and free from resonances. The motor topology and moving assembly design negate the requirement for ferro fluid.

ATC 195mm CLD midbass

The new SCM11 and SCM12 Pro feature the ATC 195mm CLD midbass driver incorporating a 45mm soft dome. Constrained Layer Damping is a driver cone technology exclusive to ATC and represents a step-change in driver-to-system performance. Advantages include reduced harmonic distortion between 300Hz and 3 kHz, an extended frequency response that eases constraints on the crossover filter slope, and improved off-axis response.

ATC 195mm CLD midbass

Constrained Layer Damping cone:

Conventional loudspeaker design recognizes that stiff driver cones generate a desirable extended on-axis frequency response. However, it comes at a price: a poor off-axis frequency response and multiple resonances that color the sound. The conventional "fix" is to damp the motion of the driver cone, but this makes the loudspeaker dramatically less efficient. Thus, every loudspeaker that has ever been designed in the genre in the history of amplified sound was virtually either acoustically compromised or inefficient.

CLD is dramatically more efficient than conventional damping because of the way it shears when the cone flexes. The shearing causes unwanted vibration energy to dissipate as frictional heat, instead of as acoustic distortion. Thus, ATC's CLD design reduces harmonic distortion between 300Hz - 3kHz, creates an extended resonance-free axial frequency response, improves the off-axis frequency response, and, if all that weren't enough, causes a huge increase in loudspeaker power response.

Super Linear technology:

This is in the form of rings of SLMM which replace the steel regions concentric with the voice coil. The effect of the rings is to reduce the third harmonic distortion by 10-15dB between 100Hz and 3kHz. This makes for distortion comparable with most electronics.

Reducing the level of distortion by such a dramatic amount has revealed another layer of information to the listener. Ambient sounds and low level effects that were previously masked are now clearly audible and provide an enhanced sense of realism. The articulation of male vocals is markedly improved and piano reproduction is given a new lease of life.

SM75-150 Dome Midrange
There are few engineering developments in any field that have effected change to the extent that ATC’s Soft Dome Midrange has on the monitoring of sound and particularly of music and voice. First produced in 1976 ATC’s soft dome represents the very best of midrange loudspeaker design and performance combining a smooth response from 350Hz to 3.5KHz, exceptionally low colouration, high power handling capacity, low power compression and high output level.

This performance is achieved in ATC’s soft dome drive unit by having a very linear low distortion drive system comprising a 75mm diameter short coil operating in a long magnet gap supported on 2 suspensions to guarantee controlled coil movement, maintain concentricity with the very tight gap-coil clearances and also ensure excellent heat dissipation and power handling. The magnet gap is also in a magnetic circuit that is saturated and therefore not affected by the non-linearity due to hysteresis of the steel used in the magnetic assembly.

ATC soft dome midrange driver ATC Super Linear bass driver

The dome diaphragm, driven at its edge by the coil-former assembly, is a soft woven fabric impregnated with a viscous damping medium to attenuate unwanted resonances and ensure a smooth response with very low audible colouration. The response of the soft dome diaphragm is further improved by mounting it in a phase correction flange the profile of which is a mirror image of the dome.

All of these elements combine to produce a midrange driver of exceptional fidelity and neutrality.

ATC’s soft dome midrange is a common element in all ATC three way systems ensuring consistency between models and the best performance money can buy.

New proprietary 12-inch driver, optimised motor mechanics:

The new SS75-314SC sub-bass driver isthe first to be purpose-built for an ATC sub-bass system and is developed by the R&D team to reproduce the lowest four octaves of the audio band. In order to achieve this, the design exploits ATC’s signature long-gap/short-coil configuration to its natural limits with an exceptionally long 30mm magnetic gap, surrounded by a 6-inch/150mm N48M Neodymium magnet - the most powerful ever assembled by ATC and a first for the company. In support, the wholly redesigned motor system features a new rubber roll-surround for high excursion capability, a new spider for optimised compliance geometry, and high flow motor venting for low noise and compression.

As well as minimising distortion, this unprecedented short-coil long-gap configuration ensures the voice coil remains within the motor structure - even at high drive levels - maximising cooling, reducing power compression, and improving reliability.  Turbulent air noise within the driver is minimised by a large, flared vent running through the centre of the motor structure, which has the added benefit of increasing voice coil and motor cooling.

The SCA 2 preamplifier was initially conceived to fulfil a specific need – to create a no-compromise amplifier to partner the range of ATC active loudspeaker systems. However, as development progressed it became abundantly clear that the SCA 2 preamplifier was capable of enhancing the performance of any audiophile separates system.

In fact, the outstanding ability of the SCA 2 left many who auditioned the final pre-production prototype in no doubt that they were listening to possibly the finest example of preamplifier design – ever.

The result is remarkable audiophile product which, in both laboratory and subjective listening tests, clearly redefines the state of the art.

ATC CA2 MK2 Preamplifier

A key feature of the SCA 2 is the total elimination of audio integrated circuits in the main signal path which is made possible through the introduction of no fewer than ten high performance discrete circuitry gain blocks. Furthermore, all amplifiers in the monitor chain are of similar type and built from discrete bipolar transistors and FETs. The input stage is a fully complimentary dual long tail pair arrangement which uses low-noise bipolar transistors with constant collector voltages provided by cascoded junction FETs. Output of the current mirrors is buffered by a pair of complimentary Sziklai Darlington transistors. To further minimise signal degradation, input circuitry including all sockets, selection relays and tape buffer is mounted directly onto a single PCB.

In essence, the gain block within the SCA 2 is a high output, low distortion amplifier with a very wide bandwidth which is easy to use in conventional feedback configuration because it has only one stage of gain (in other words, there is only one possible source of roll-off and phase shift at high frequency).

The result is remarkable audiophile product which, in both laboratory and subjective listening tests, clearly redefines the state of the art.

ATC CDA2 DAC preamplifier

Clean stable power supplies result from local active decoupling of supply rails adjacent to each gain stage, with each channel separated to minimise crosstalk of supply artifacts.

Auditioning reveals an open, neutral, transparency the amplifier creating a solid soundstage which is both wide and deep. Voices are reproduced with uncanny realism being portrayed with natural warmth and articulation. Bass takes on a rich, superbly controlled solidity. Strings are reproduced with a fine degree of detail and texture, while brass is conveyed with attack and clarity. Percussion is handled with great speed and definition. As you’d expect from a design as highly specified as the SCA 2, dynamic range is outstanding.

The distinctive case of the SCA 2 is constructed from aerospace grade peened stainless steel. The 440mm (17%) wide front panel is edged with bead-blasted machined aluminium the fascia being finished in polished acrylic. Optional alternative colours and surface treatments are available to special order.

As designers of the worlds most sophisticated loudspeaker drive units ATC are only too aware of the requirements for a power amplifier to properly drive a real loudspeaker load. The grounded source amplifier, with its novel swinging supply, best meets those requirements.

We are using a grounded source output stage, driven by a buffer based on a discrete gain block which enables the amplifier to deliver such astonishing performance figures. Used in this way to drive the FET output stage, distortion components are more than 95db down under any conditions, ensuring totally clean and transparent sound with the effortless dynamics for which ATC is justly famous.

ATC P1 Power amplifier

ATC amplifiers are thermally protected and include a super fast acting FET limiter to protect the drivers in the event of an unexpected peak. Because these limiters are designed specifically for driver protection, they do not leave a big audio footprint and are far less intrusive in operation than conventional limiter designs.

The high electrical damping from the power amplifier keeps the system tightly controlled, providing well defined bass and midrange detail.

SPA2-150 Power amplifier

Input to the amplifier utilises a similar discrete gain block and offers both balanced and unbalanced capability for universal system matching. This input buffer, which completely eliminates integrated circuits, achieves the same levels of transparency as the famous ATC SCA2 pre amplifier.

ATC SPA2-150 Power amplifier

Input to the amplifier utilises a similar discrete gain block and offers both balanced and unbalanced capability for universal system matching. This input buffer, which completely eliminates integrated circuits, achieves the same levels of transparency as the famous ATC SCA2 pre amplifier.

The output stage of the SPA2-150 is continuously monitored by microcomputer and a carefully programmed limiter prevents amplifier clip and protects loudspeaker drive units.

Front panel indication of limiter operation is provided separately for each channel. Additionally the amplifier is monitored for over-temperature and DC offset.

ATC P1 Power amplifier

Construction is Twin-mono, with separate high capacity mains transformers for each channel. The FET output stage is very fast and layouts follow best RF practice with direct signal paths and direct low impedance power supplies.

Remote control of the SPA2-150 is possible using the SCA R remote controller, or any other standard RC5 device. High quality connectors are used throughout including massive WBT terminals.

Styling is complementary to the SCA2 with high quality peened stainless steel covers atop naked aluminium machined corners. A dark grey textured finish is also available to special order.
